Ian Diamond to take over top spot at ESRC

* Ian Diamond, deputy vice-chancellor of Southampton University, is to take over as chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council. He will succeed Gordon Marshall, who steps down next January.

Professor Diamond, a social scientist, has been at Southampton for 22 years.

He will be paid £80,000 plus up to 20 per cent of basic salary as annual performance pay.
