Brussels, 09 August 2002

An international conference on alternatives to animal testing in biomedical research will take place in New Orleans, USA on 11 to 15 August.

The event will focus on the '3Rs': replacement of animals, reduction of the number of animals used and refinement of procedures, so that pain, distress and suffering are minimised. Presentations will also cover education, validation and ethics. ECVAM, the European centre for the validation of alternative methods is one of the event's sponsors.

Participants will include representatives from government agencies, industry, animal protection organisations and scientific research institutes from around the world.

Billed as a highlight is a lecture by Charles DeLisi on the 'virtual human project'. Professor DeLisi began the Human genome project, and is currently designing software that will mimic all of the physiological processes of a human being.
