A forum was held at the University of Sussex yesterday on issues of academic freedom, academic power and equality of students after Geoffrey Sampson, a professor of natural language processing, posted an article in support of racism on his personal website.
Staff and students have been split over Professor Sampson's right to express such views. Students have called for his resignation, but some lecturers feared that sacking him would set a bad precedent when 70 posts were being cut.
