Some UK universities are sitting on a potential goldmine of gene-based patents which could lead to new medical treatments such as

  • A once-a-year gene treatment for haemophiliacs
  • A cure for the fungus that kills 1200 people a year in the UK
  • Heart and epilepsy drugs which correct electrical faults in nerve cells

Others appear to have no gene patents at all.
