A nasty shock was in store for one student employed by Southampton University to ring up alumni and touch them for a tenner or two. After a polite greeting to one alumnus, the student launched into his spiel, saying he wanted to inform the listener of the current crisis in university funding. "I know," replied the alumnus. "I'm a union official."
