Heads will roll

This week's alumnus to be proud of (number 154 in the series) is the second person after Oliver Cromwell to find out that removing the monarch's head can lead to controversy. Justin Mortimer, , has seen his painting, in which the Queen's head floats above the black outline of her throne, condemned by 70 per cent of respondents to a BBC poll, none of them alarmed by the fact that they have not seen it yet. The painting will find a permanent home at the Royal Society of Arts, which commissioned it to mark 50 years of links with the Queen. Mortimer graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1992.
