The Lebanese American University (LAU) is a recognized not-for-profit, private university established in 1924, chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in the United States of America.
LAU operates in Lebanon through its Beirut, Byblos, and New York campuses. LAU is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), and many of its schools and programs are accredited by US specialized institutions (including AACSB, ABET, ACEND, ACGME-I, ACPE, ACPHA, CCNE, NAAB, NASAD, and TEPDAD).
With roots dating back to 1835, the university was founded as the American Junior College for Women in Beirut in 1924, later expanded as the Beirut College of Women, and became coeducational in 1973 as the Beirut University College, when the university also established an institute dedicated to women’s studies, known today as the Arab Institute for Women.
The university maintains an enrollment of 9,000+ students and 2,000+ full-time and part-time faculty and staff. More than 57,000 alumni are part of its global community.
LAU has a long history of serving the needs of Lebanon and the Middle East. To this day, it remains at the forefront of holistic education and innovation, equipping its students with a broad foundation of knowledge and soft skills that increase their chances of employability and success.
In addition to its campuses, LAU operates two academic medical centers in Lebanon.
Its seven schools serve undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral/professional practice students across more than 60 degree-granting programs.
