Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) was founded in 1993, after the merging of Glasgow Polytechnic with The Queen's College. 

Home to more than 20,000 students, it is now one of Scotland's largest universities and, with over £45million recently invested in state-of-the-art facilities, its main campus in Glasgow city centre is regarded as one of the most modern campuses in the UK.

The university is made up of three schools: the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow School for Business and Society, and School of Health and Life Sciences. GCU also has a presence in New York City and in Spitalfields in London, which offers postgraduate courses in fashion.

GCU prides itself on being a practical institution that offers a unique range of degree programmes. It is the only university to offer an Honours degree in Risk Management and its London-based school of fashion is the only one of its kind to offer an MBA in Luxury Brand Management.

The university's practical approach has led to the development of teaching facilities such as a virtual hospital, broadcasting suite and a fashion factory. It’s an approach that’s been commended by the Confederation of British Industry and Future Fit, among others, for successfully preparing its students for employment.

GCU is also a popular choice among students for its courses in nursing and midwifery, and the university boasts strong links with the NHS.

It has a strong reputation for implementing effective widening access policies. Its award-winning initiative, The Caledonian Club, works with young people in Glasgow and London to tackle below average progression rates into higher education.

The university's motto is 'For the common good' and it is one of only 29 universities and colleges in the world to be certified as a 'Changemaker Campus' by Ashoka U, for promoting higher education as a vehicle for social change. Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position for a contract starting in March 2026 and ending in December 2027 (22 months). The position is open at the Department of Microbiology located in Viikki campus in Helsinki, Finland. Position description The successful candidate will work within the research project “From Clay to Code: Investigating Microbial Evolution in Response to Human Influence” funded by the Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences (HiLIFE). The project aims to establish a scientific foundation for investigating viable ancient bacteria recovered from archaeological ceramics to determine the evolutionary trajectories and adaptation mechanisms of the isolated bacteria under anthropogenic influences. Advances in ancient DNA techniques have substantially increased our understanding of past human populations, other animals as well as on ecology and evolution of microbial diseases. However, dormant forms of microbes that can persist for extremely long periods of time in the right conditions, may also act as windows to the past. In this work we will compare ancient and modern bacteria with various methods. By integrating the findings with archaeological knowledge, the goal is to elucidate bacterial genetic evolution that was shaped by human influence and make predictions to the future. The work provides the possibility to develop skills in microbiology, data analysis, bioinformatics and molecular dating methods in an international and multidisciplinary setting and gain a competitive academic CV. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to: Advance the research project together with the team Participate in future funding application preparations for the project The work may also include teaching duties (10-20 % of annual working time). Requirements and eligibility criteria  The appointee shall hold a doctoral degree in microbiology or bioinformatics (or a related field) and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work. The degree requirement (doctoral degree) must be met by the beginning of the employment. Other requirements are a good computational background (basic knowledge of R, Python or Bash programming languages) as well as experience in analysing sequencing data with cluster computing environments. Experience with molecular dating methods and nanopore sequencing is considered an advantage. Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are expected. Salary and benefits The salary is defined in accordance with the University’s salary system for teaching and research personnel. The Postdoctoral Researcher’s salary is based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The starting salary of the Postdoctoral Researcher will c. 3600 euros/month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop new herbicide compounds focusing on synthesis and characterizations of HPPD inhibitor herbicides. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. i. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: ii. Design and synthesize novel HPPD inhibitor compounds iii. Conduct laboratory experiments for the synthesis of target compounds, including purification and characterization using techniques such as NMR, MS, FTIR, GC and HPLC Optimize synthetic routes and troubleshoot any challenges encountered during synthesis Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements A master’s degree or Ph.D. in chemistry, or a related field. Experience in organic synthesis techniques and analytical instrumentation. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
