Glasgow University's department of English language is suffering from a severe outbreak of double vision, with everyone sharing a name with a colleague.

There are two Catherines, two Caroles, two Irenes, Professors Caie and Kay, and two secretaries who are called Maureen, naturally.

J. J. Smith stood apart from the confusion until this summer, when the university appointed J. S. Smith.
