Who's in who's out?

LEEDS

Stephen Mobbs, above, is the new director of the Natural Environment Research Council's Centres for Atmospheric Science. Professor Mobbs, who founded Leeds University's Environment Centre in 1999, takes over from Reading University's Alan Thorpe, who is now chief executive of Nerc.

The directorship of the programme, which is spread across several universities and research institutes, moves to Leeds under Professor Mobbs.

The Leeds Environment Centre has grown to become the School of Earth and Environment, and Professor Mobbs continues as professor of atmospheric dynamics.

IN

Anand Pillay , of the University of Illinois, takes up the chair in mathematical logic.

Vanalyn Green , of the department of film, video and new media at the Art Institute of Chicago, takes up a chair of fine art.

Gill Valentine , of Sheffield University, takes up the chair of human geography.

Stephen Bottoms , of the department of theatre, film and television studies at Glasgow University, takes up the chair of drama and theatre studies.

OUT

Roger Beard , formerly of the School of Education, moves to the Institute of Education.

Richard Taylor , of the School of Continuing Education, has gone to Cambridge University's Institute of Continuing Education.

Andrew Beeby , professor of structural design, is retiring.

Peter Johnson , professor of computational chemistry, is also retiring.
