Who got that job?

November 12, 2004

Li Zhang
Lecturer in wireless multimedia, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Institute of Integrated Information Systems, Leeds University Job advertised in The Times Higher , February 13, 2004.

Li Zhang is developing new mathematical procedures to improve communications between the next generation of wireless technologies, enabling, for example, future computers to be wire free.

She said: "I've always been interested by wireless communications.

"I came to York from China for my PhD and decided to stay. I was lucky to have a choice of three jobs. Leeds was most attractive since it is 5* rated and there are good career opportunities. The people are friendly and helpful on what grants to apply for."

Dr Zhang found the selection process exhausting. "I can't remember how many people I talked with, and I had to have a formal lunch, make a presentation and then give a formal interview."

"I'm looking forward to having PhD students and research assistants. With help, you can realise your ideas."

"Many people can achieve this if they try," she said. "But it is important to relax. I like swimming, badminton and movies."
