Welcome Sir Graeme Davies, the former principal of the University of Glasgow, who last month became vice-chancellor of the University of London. Vice-chancellors gathered in the capital last week were on the point of organising a whip-round to buy Sir Graeme - who lists his hobbies as "cricket, birdwatching, golf and The Times crossword" - a brand new set of golf clubs. Apparently, they would prefer him to do the job on a part-time basis.
