The Higher Education Funding Council for Wales is to invest £5.3 million to support "major change" in the structure of Welsh higher education.
Money will be allocated to institutions that have submitted proposals for mergers, reconfiguration and collaboration.
Structural change is at the heart of proposals in the Welsh Assembly's ten-year plan for higher education, published earlier this year.
