University employers agreed to meet with unions this week after discovering that staff have been refusing to carry out administration, research or teaching for the past six months.
The protest, over this year's 0.5 per cent pay offer, was brought to the attention of vice-chancellors by newspaper league tables that awarded most institutions zero.
