Not an easy life, that of a telephonist in a higher education that spawns long and unwieldy names like Higher Education Funding Council for England, Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals and for that matter Times Higher Education Supplement. Improvisation rules with occasionally diverting results - callers to the staid CVCP last week were greeted by a cheerfully upbeat "Vice Chancellors", splendidly suggestive of a rather louche nightclub.
