US national university for schoolteachers

John Edwards, a Democratic presidential hopeful, has proposed a national university to train schoolteachers in the US.

The institution - which he described as "a West Point for teachers", referring to the US Army's elite military academy - would take 1,000 top students a year and would waive tuition fees for those in schools and subject areas facing shortages.
