Dawkins renews attack on Iraq invaders
Scientist Richard Dawkins today renewed his attack on the US and the UK over their invasion of Iraq and said that any coalition action against Syria would be born of "pure self interest". Dawkins, professor of the public understanding of science at Oxford University, said that military success had done nothing to temper his opposition. He spoke as he arrived in Edinburgh for a reading at the city's International Science Festival.

Scientists to strengthen their mussels
Scientists want to set up an "introduction agency" for ageing shellfish and help save a threatened species, the Environment Agency said today. The youngest mussels, freshwater pearl mussels, in England and Wales are middle-aged and their numbers are dropping as they lead solitary lives. The mussels do breed successfully in Scotland and Ireland so scientists may move some of the populations.
