Superstition survey kicks off week of science
A superstition survey looking at the strange fears and beliefs of people across Britain was launched today as part of National Science Week. Hertfordshire University psychologist Richard Wiseman will attempt to find out how many of us touch wood, cross our fingers or avoid walking under ladders.
Oxford campaigners deliver petition to No. 10
Anti-war campaigners from Oxford University handed in a 2,000-name petition to Downing Street today. More than 700 staff and 1,300 students have signed up, including four current and former college heads, 29 fellows of the Royal Society and the British Academy and nearly 80 professors.

The City of Edinburgh Council has called on management experts at St Andrews University to develop a vision for Scotland's capital in 2020. Management professor Peter McKiernan, leader of the six-month study, said Edinburgh had various initiatives to deliver a range of benefits but these were currently unconnected.
