Law lord runs for Oxford chancellorship
Lord Bingham, the country's most senior law lord, today put his name forward for cChancellor of Oxford University and immediately declared his support of top-up fees. The peer said he would rather see the controversial funding system than allow Oxford to "slide into mediocrity".

Edinburgh in £1m library catalogue deal
Edinburgh University and bibliographic software company ExLibris have won a £1 million contract to set up the first online catalogue of all journals and newspapers in British research institutions. The four-year project will bring together databases from more than 200 libraries.

California State University gets $1m for teachers
Wells Fargo has given $1 million (£610,000) to California State University Northridge in Los Angeles to support future teachers and business leaders. It is the largest gift ever given to a university in the San Fernando Valley region.

Malaysia plans to evacuate students from Baghdad
Malaysia is preparing to evacuate more than 200 of its students from Baghdad if war with Iraq breaks out, the country's national news agency reported.
