It is one thing for a law graduate to go slightly off the rails (in this case by embezzling Pounds 16,000 from a client). It is quite another, while on the run, to write to one's alma mater for a copy of one's degree certificate. Alexandra MacRae, a former Scottish National Party candidate who in her male days traded as Stephen Rae, will probably never be named with pride in any list of distinguished law graduates of the University of Edinburgh.
