The University of Wales, Lampeter, may have to scale down its range of subjects and activities after a dramatic drop in enrolment. Vice-chancellor Keith Robbins has warned staff that the university is likely to face cuts.
Lecturers' union leaders have claimed recruitment may be down as much as 30 per cent, which could threaten the viability of the institution. Professor Robbins denied that the university could be forced to close, or that it was accelerating merger talks with the University of Wales College, Newport.
But he agreed that clearing had been "virtually non-existent".
