The University of Salford will host a conference on data mining, the controversial online monitoring technique. The UK Symposium on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining 2009, to be held at the Lowry, Salford Quays on 22 April, will feature companies including Microsoft and Deloitte. Data mining is a process that helps firms gather information on consumers based on their online habits. It is claimed that the process can help to prevent online fraud, although detractors have criticised its privacy implications.
