Ants and bacteria have inspired research that has netted two scientists at the University of Portsmouth major grants worth £652,000 from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Andy Pickford picked up a £312,000 research grant to find new solutions to complicated problems in structural biology by using lessons learnt from the study of social insects such as ants. Anastasia Callaghan won a £340,000 grant to investigate a mechanism of genetic regulation within bacteria, which could help antibiotic research.
