The difficulty of compiling football fixture lists for Christmas and New Year may have been eased by an academic from the University of Nottingham. Graham Kendall, professor at the School of Computer Science, has devised software that automatically takes into account detailed criteria laid down by the football authorities. The programme can co-ordinate 92 teams and 46 fixtures to guarantee that teams do not play each other twice over the holiday period, ensure that supporters do not have to travel too far and reduce the pressure on policing and the transport network. Professor Kendall is discussing his results with the Football League.
