Computer scientists at the University of Edinburgh have given the emergency services free access to new software that could slash crisis-response times. The software, which combines the technology used in virtual world Second Life and social networking site Facebook, will allow users to co-ordinate their responses from a virtual command centre. The programme's creators said it will enable emergency services to remotely monitor and plan responses to major disasters, such as earthquakes.
