Unionist deported

February 10, 2006

A Russian political scientist has been deported from Ukraine after being detained at an airport in Crimea on his way to address a seminar at Tavryda University.

Kirill Frolov of the Institute of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Moscow was accused by the Ukrainian security service of fanning interfaith strife and promoting separatist tendencies. He was banned from Ukraine for two years.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said this was "inconsistent with the traditional friendship" between Russia and Ukraine.

Professor Frolov is spokesman for the Union of Orthodox Citizens, which aims to reintegrate Russia, Belarus and Ukraine into a single state.
