And what did you do on your birthday? It would take someone with an extreme grievance against economic historians not to feel some sympathy for Roderick Floud, vice chancellor of London Guildhall University, who had to spend a significant part of his 54th birthday this week outlining LGU's survival plan - job cuts, tough economies and all - to the university's governors.
