The ballot on whether lecturers' union Natfhe should continue pay talks or go straight to a vote on industrial action was running neck and neck as The THES went to press. Postal strikes meant that the union had received just two completed ballot papers from the 18,000 that went out - one in favour of talks, one calling for strikes.
