High-speed genome sequencing, the most detailed study of atoms and electrons yet and a freezing platform to be used in the development of quantum electronics are among seven projects to share £21 million of funding announced by the research councils this week as part of the Basic Technology programme.

The scheme fosters technologies that will help the UK advance into the 21st century.
