Aberdeen University scientists have won £30,000 from the European Union for research to create the perfect pint.
They will be part of a team of brewers and researchers from Finland, Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom developing a new test kit to detect contaminants in the brewing process.
An Aberdeen spin-off company, the National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria, will preserve intact any organisms discovered that may prove harmful to beer.
