The naked truth

March 16, 2007

A Romanian philosophy lecturer has been told by his bosses to remove nude pictures of his wife and himself that could be viewed by clicking a link on Bucharest University's web page. Gheorghe Stefanov has also been told that he cannot apply for any other position in his faculty for the next three years as punishment for linking his personal blog - and the pictures - to the official university website.

But Mr Stefanov, who has removed the pictures from his blog, said that nudity, sexuality and eroticism were all perfectly normal areas of study for philosophers. "Are those pictures indecent?" he asked. "I do not think so. Are they pornographic? I do not think so. I do not think I am setting a bad example for my students, and I think it is quite normal to have a link to my blog from the university website. My blog is not about nudity and in fact has lots of topics under debate."
