Thames Valley plans

December 4, 1998

The statement that "Troubled TVU's teaching could be farmed out" is purely speculative (THES, November ).

There are no plans for "significant chunks of teaching to be hived off to neighbouring institutions", as your article could be taken to imply.

An action plan that responds to the Quality Assurance Agency report will be in the hands of the Higher Education Funding Council by the end of March. Many of the discussions that will help shape that plan have yet to take place. The dismemberment of TVU is neither a desired nor a favoured option.

My colleagues are working hard to foster the learning of our present students and to ensure that they and those who follow them earn quality awards of which they can be proud. Speculation of the kind in which you are indulging undermines that effort and helps no one.
