The first of five clinical research facilities allowing scientists to test treatments on healthy patients opened at Southampton's General Hospital this week.
The 12-bed facility, which was built with a £3.9 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, was the result of a joint bid between Southampton University and Southampton University Hospitals Trust.
Wellcome has spent £16 million funding similar facilities in Cambridge, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.
