Tables? Pah. But we're tops!

League tables are typically derided by those who fail to top them and acclaimed by those who do - as evidenced most recently in the vision for University College London being developed by Malcolm Grant, its provost. Professor Grant writes: "We should not place too much faith in league tables. But nor should we be surprised by the recent table of the world's top 500 universities in which UCL was in the top 20."
