April 14, 2000

A philosophy professor has been charged with sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour by Swansea University.

Laurence Goldstein stood down as head of the philosophy department earlier this year following an outcry over sexually explicit jokes he had told as compere of the department's Christmas party. It has emerged that the allegations extended beyond his jokes. The university confirmed this week that following an investigation into a number of allegations against Professor Goldstein, and after considering his response to them, Swansea vice-chancellor Robin Williams asked the university council to convene a tribunal to hear the charges against him.

It is understood that prior to the jokes at Christmas party, staff members and the students union had made complaints about him.

Professor Goldstein has reportedly dismissed the jokes as "no more offensive" than those on TV.
