The College of Arms has this week presented a new coat of arms to Swansea Metropolitan University (SMU), marking its change of name from Swansea Institute. Robert John Baptist Noel, an officer of arms at the college, devised the coat of arms. Its symbolism includes hazelnuts, which denote good luck for ships at sea and mark SMU's maritime location, as well as representing a Celtic connection with wisdom. The three hazelnuts represent SMU's 19th-century founding colleges: the School of Art, the School of Teacher Education and the Technology College.
