The University Campus Suffolk project is set to receive a £12.5 million cash injection.
Subject to government authorisation, the East of England Development Agency has approved the new grant to help boost the project, which aims to establish a new university campus with a hub on the Ipswich waterfront, as well as promoting university-level education across Suffolk.
The initiative is a partnership between the University of East Anglia, the University of Essex and further education colleges.
