* Birmingham University has told postgraduate students that they may have to move to another institution as it sheds staff in cuts to save over £5 million.
Up to 16 academic posts may go as part of restructuring to help the university balance the books and to boost research performance.
Student union leaders said they were "appalled" when postgraduate students in six schools were told they might need to have a supervisor from another institution or transfer to another university.
A university spokesman said undergraduate courses would not be disrupted.
