Refreshing candour from Roy Wood of the Scottish Hotel School at Strathclyde University, in his report of a presentation during the university senate meeting by Allister Ferguson of the Institute of Photonics.

"For those, like me, whose knowledge of 'photons' is entirely confined to awareness that they are used in the torpedoes carried by Star Trek's USS Enterprise, it appears that photonics/opto-electronics is concerned with the technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy."
