A new national football research centre was due to be officially opened by Gerry Sutcliffe, the Minister for Sport, at Southampton Solent University on 16 September. The Lawrie McMenemy Centre for Football Research will provide research and consultancy support for the football industry in a number of key areas, including management, administration, globalisation, commercialisation, foreign-player involvement, fans and scientific support.
