Students from St Andrews University this week achieved the worst score so far in the current series of BBC quiz show University Challenge.

The team scored 40 points while Churchill College, Cambridge, amassed 215 points. It was thought to be the second-worst performance in the show's history.

A university spokeswoman said: "It has been well reported that St Andrews students have been advised to think very carefully before answering questions from members of the media - so we can only assume that the presence of host Jeremy Paxman put them off somewhat."
