In full view of the millions tuned in to Coronation Street on December 20, a new and crushing blow was delivered to supporters of the former polytechnics. The programme's Audrey assured the nation that "degrees from those new universities" were "not worth the paper they were written on". After a blow of this magnitude, their grades in the research assessment exercise will come as a positive relief.
