The latest entrant for the worst acronym in academe competition has just arrived, courtesy of the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Provoking reminiscences of The Diary's schooling - when every lesson began with the words "settle down, settle down" - the new centres of excellence in teaching and learning will be known as CETLs.
