Take John Lycett, an evolutionary psychologist at Liverpool University, who selflessly dedicated three weeks, with his researchers, to observing the behaviour of mobile phone owners in Merseyside pubs. The conclusion? That men fiddle with their mobiles to attract the opposite sex. Whose round?
