Research and development (R&D) indicators and data for social sciences and humanities

The European Commission's Research DG has published a call for tenders for a contract relating to research and development (R&D) indicators and data for social sciences and humanities.

The work programme 2004-2006 for priority 7 of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), 'Citizens and Governance in a knowledge based society' includes 'Actions to promote the European Research Area in the social sciences and humanities and their contribution to the knowledge based society in Europe'. Within this research area, it is foreseen to develop 'the basis of European R&D indicators and statistics in the field of social sciences and humanities' in order to develop appropriate indicators to support policies for social sciences and humanities (SSH).

The study that is the object of this call for tender is one of the activities that will contribute to providing European research and development indicators and statistics in the field of SSH.

The main objective of the study is to collect existing data, to identify gaps in data, to develop methodologies for filling gaps and to collect new data on research and development and human resources in SSH. Furthermore, it should be analysed whether the SSH research activities differ in comparison to the natural sciences and engineering, upon which the existing technical definitions and concepts of the traditional science, technology and innovation indicators are largely based.
