Prizes for star ideas

Leading British firms and institutions have launched an award scheme aimed at rewarding outstanding students in science, engineering and technology.

The 12 categories for the awards cover the main science and engineering subjects offered by universities, including aeronautical engineering, biology, civil engineering, food technology, mechanical engineering, physics and chemistry.

There is also an overall category of science, engineering and technology student of the year. The winning students' university in each subject category will receive Pounds 1,500 and the student Pounds 500.

The scheme is backed by companies and bodies including the Engineering Council, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, ICI, SmithKline Beecham and Unilever. Entry forms will shortly be distributed to universities.
