Janez Potocnik, the new European Commissioner for Science and Research, will address a conference on European research policy issues at Manchester University this week. Mr Potocnik is speaking at the first annual meeting of a European-wide network of researchers, called the Policies for Research and Innovation in the Move Towards the European Research Area Network of Excellence. The network brings together more than 200 research and innovation policy academics from 44 institutions across Europe.

The conference, at Manchester Business School on January 7 and 8, will consider the future of research in Europe over the next decade.
