Delegations will find in the Annex an information note from the UK Presidency on the above- mentioned subject, which will be dealt with under "Other Business" at the Council (Environment) meeting on 2 December 2005. ANNEX Communication from the Commission to the Council, the European Parliament and the Economic and Social Committee "Nanosciences and nanotechnologies: An action plan for Europe 2005-2009 Information note by the UK Presidency Introduction The Commission issued an action plan on nanotechnology in June 2005. This set out a series of actions for the Commission and Member States for the immediate implementation of a safe, integrated and responsible strategy for nanosciences and nanotechnologies. This has been developed through the Competitiveness Council, however the latter four points of the plan address issues relating to regulatory and societal dimensions, which will be of interest to the Environment Council. As new developments in nanosciences and nanotechnologies arise, products taking advantage of the special properties which materials exhibit at the nanoscale will enter manufacture, use and ultimately require disposal. There is global recognition that these special properties may offer both opportunities and threats to humanity and the environment. The structure of the Action Plan
