One of the surprises of the election aftermath: the sight of Ian MacKenzie entering No 10 Downing Street along with new boss Ann Taylor. Formerly president of the student union at the University of East Anglia, Mr MacKenzie is now a power in the land as political adviser to Taylor in her role as President of the Council, complete with his own Whitehall office and impressively-dimensioned desk.

His sartorial style has also gone up a notch from DIY-chic to New Labour, Immense Dry Cleaning Bill. Contrast the less glittering fortunes of his former boss David Leyland (see above):Mr MacKenzie was once press officer at Southampton Institute.
