(Photograph) - Posterity plaques: Edinburgh University's principal, Sir Stewart Sutherland, displays the first in a series of millennial plaques commemorating the achievements of university staff, students and benefactors since Edinburgh's foundation in 1583. Those honoured by the initial plaques include philosopher David Hume, anaesthetics pioneer Sir James Simpson, brewery founder William McEwan and African statesman Julius Nyerere.
